Meet the producer; guided wine & food pairing
Join our Head Sommelier for an opulent evening at Piccolino Wilmslow, as we invite two of our favourite producers – Damijan and Moschioni – to pair the finest wines from their vineyard with an exquisite 6-course menu.
About Michele Moschioni
Michele Moschioni’s tiny estate is located in Cividale, Friuli.. Moschioni credits Romano Dal Forno as an early inspiration for his wines. The producer favours late harvests, which can stretch into mid-October or early November. Because fruit often struggles to ripen in this northerly microclimate, in some vintages, Moschioni performs a slight drying or appassimento on a portion of his grapes. As Moschioni says, he likes fat wines and these are powerful, intense offerings with dry extract levels that are off the charts. The wines are fermented using only natural yeasts. For his top bottlings – Pignolo, Schiopettino and Rosso Reâl – Moschioni uses open-top wood fermenters without temperature control and ages all his wines for 10 years before releasing the vintage onto the market.
Moschioni wines that will be matched:
Brut Moschioni, a blend of Chardonnay and Ribolla Metodo Classico.
Rosso Real 2013, a deep, inky purple, colour. Expressive wine packed with vibrant fruit and extraordinary complexity. (50% Tazzelenghe, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot)
Schioppettino 2013, this is an indigenous grape variety full of spiciness, very dense, rich and plush with an outstanding ripeness and depth and an extraordinary acidity which underlines its perfect balance. (Schioppettino)
About Damijan Podversic
A dreamer motivated by the desire to revive and improve local grape varieties located in a terroir well-suited to the viticulture of white wines, such as Collio, in Friuli.
This is a man who lives for his vineyards and family. Biodynamic in his soul, he produces wines after incredibly long macerations of up to 70 and even 90 days for his white wines. Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Friulano and other indigenous grape varieties are some wines we will try together during the event. The vinification, entirely conducted in large wood barrels, also follows the moon phases and traditional, slow rhythms, with extended skin-must contact until the end of the fermentation process. The outstanding quality and perfect ripeness of the grapes, Damijan's skill in the cellar and his deep understanding of nature and winemaking result in wines of exceptional purity that showcase a solid territorial identity on both the nose and palate. His production is considered among the top white wines of Italy and can be found only in the best restaurants in the world.
Damijan wines that will be matched:
Kapja 2019, the only blended wine of the winery (Chardonnay, Malvasia and Friulano)
Nekaj 2018, an orange-style wine full of elegance and balance (Tokai)
